How to propagate money tree
The meaning of the money tree is to attract wealth and abundant wealth. Because of its beautiful meaning, it is loved by the majority of flower lovers. So do you know how the money tree reproduces? Today Dougen will introduce to you the common propagation methods of money trees.
There are generally four methods of propagating money trees: sowing, cutting, grafting, and tissue culture. We will introduce them one by one below.
1. Sowing and reproduction
Sowing time:
The best time to sow money tree is in spring, when the temperature is above 20°C, which is more suitable for seed germination.
Seed selection:
The seeds of the money tree should be fresh and plump. Generally, you can buy the fruits of the money tree and then take out the seeds for sowing.
Germination:
After removing the seeds from the fruit, place the seeds on a moist paper towel or cotton and place them in a warm place for germination. The seeds can be planted after they absorb water, swell, and crack to reveal young buds.
Soil preparation:
Money trees are suitable for growing in soft, well-ventilated soil. You can mix garden soil, humus soil and perlite, or you can directly purchase soil specially designed for money trees.
Planting method:
Place the germinated seeds into the prepared soil. After sowing, they need to be covered with soil, but not too thick. Just cover it with a layer of soil of 1-2cm. Then water it thoroughly, then place it in a ventilated and shaded place, spray water frequently to keep the humidity sufficient, and wait for germination, which usually takes 5-7 days.
Precautions:
①The most suitable temperature for money tree seeds to germinate is around 20°C. After sowing, the temperature must be controlled within this range to avoid the temperature being too high or too low.
② Do not give strong direct light immediately after sowing. It is best to keep it in a ventilated and cool place for a period of time. Later, it can be given appropriate astigmatism. After the sprouts grow well, the light intensity can be gradually increased.
③After sowing, apply an appropriate amount of water to ensure that the soil is moist. In the later stage, the water application must be controlled. After the soil is dry, add appropriate amounts of water.
Germination will occur about a week after sowing. Wait until the sprouts grow to about 26 cm before thinning appropriately to ensure a reasonable density. In addition, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers can be applied twice throughout the seedling period to promote stem development.
2. Propagation by cuttings
Cutting time:
The best time to cut money tree is in spring when the temperature is suitable.
Soil preparation:
Just like sowing seeds, choose soil that is soft and breathable. You can mix garden soil, humus soil and perlite, or directly purchase soil specifically designed for money trees.
Choose branches:
Use strong branches from the current year and try not to use newly grown branches. The best branches are about 10-20cm. When cutting, it is best to use sterilized scissors to cut off healthy branches. Use scissors to cut the lower end of the branch flatly and diagonally, and remove all the excess leaves in the lower part, leaving only the two or three leaves at the top. Because too many leaves will consume some unnecessary salt, it can also prevent water from evaporating too quickly during root growth. Apply some rooting powder to the incision of the branch, or soak it in a solution prepared with rooting powder for 1 hour.
Make cuttings:
Insert the treated branches into the prepared soil. Be careful not to damage the wounds on the branches, otherwise it will easily affect its survival rate. Then place it in a ventilated and shaded place, spray water frequently to keep the humidity sufficient, and wait for germination, which usually takes about 20 days.
Precautions:
① Since the cutting time is between June and August, water evaporates quickly during this period, so it is necessary to replenish water. It is best to spray water once every morning or evening.
② After cutting, the branches will enter the state of rooting. At this time, they should avoid strong light to avoid a large amount of water loss. It is best to give them mild light to promote the rapid rooting and growth of the branches.
③The temperature is slightly higher from June to August. At this time, ventilation work needs to be done. The branches cannot be left in a hot and unventilated environment, otherwise the rooting rate will be reduced.
3. Grafting and propagation
If the money tree is sown normally, it will take about 8 years to bloom and bear fruit. The time is still relatively long. If you can’t wait, you can choose to propagate it by grafting.
Rootstock and scion: Select healthy branches and leaves of fortune. You can leave 1 to 2 buds, and then cut the lower end of the bud diagonally (on both sides). Then cut off the rootstock 40 cm away, and make a cut down the length of the section. As shown below:
Insert the scion into the slit of the rootstock, tie it tightly with film tape and cover it with a film bag, just like grafting other trees. This is to prevent rain from getting the joint wet. Wait a month or so for new shoots to appear and remove the bag. Of course, if you keep it indoors, you don’t need to bag it.
Precautions:
① Do not insert all the shaved surface of the cutting into the split opening of the stock. It is best to expose 2 mm.
②After grafting, do not expose it to strong light to avoid strong light burning the plant and losing a lot of water, which will reduce the success rate of grafting.
③After grafting, measures should be taken to protect the graft from rain, so as not to allow rainwater to reach the grafting site, so as not to affect the healing of the wound, or even cause the wound to be infected with germs, leading to grafting failure.
4. Tissue culture propagation
The most important thing for propagation using tissue culture is to do a good job of cleaning and disinfection in the early stages. Wash repeatedly with distilled water to remove dust on the surface of the seeds, then soak and disinfect with 70% alcohol, and then rinse with sterile water. to three times, and finally place the treated seeds in a sterile petri dish for culture.
Money tree seeds will germinate at 7 to 10 degrees Celsius, be induced into callus at 15 to 20 degrees Celsius, and callus will be induced to differentiate into clusters of buds at around 30 degrees Celsius. Then the clustered sprouts are planted in the medium for subculture, and finally the seedlings are inoculated into the rooting medium. Seedlings can grow at 7-10°C and then transplanted.
In general, the vitality of the money tree is still very tenacious. All four propagation methods are easy to survive. However, in terms of convenience and survival rate, cutting is the best. You can choose a method to reproduce according to the actual situation. Regarding the propagation method of the money tree, Dougen has introduced it here. I hope it can be helpful to you.
