When to cut back roses for winter
Many people will ask when is the winter pruning time for roses? Some people will answer January. In fact, time is not a criterion, but temperature is.
When the temperature continues to fall below 5°C for a certain period of time, roses will begin to go dormant. When dormant, the flower seedlings send signals to the stems and leaves to stop absorbing nutrients, and return the nutrients to the roots for storage, minimizing life activities. When spring warms up, the flower seedlings will redistribute nutrients to supply branches and leaves for growth and bud points to germinate. The energy accumulated over the winter will cause the roses to burst into bloom.

Trim based on temperature
1. Prune when the weather is the coldest (between Minor Cold and Major Cold, which is the coldest time of the year);
2. When the temperature drops below 0 degrees, start pruning. Never delay pruning until growth has begun, otherwise the tree will lose a lot of sap or deplete nutrients to inappropriate growing parts, causing the plant to become weak. If you prune after germination, a large number of flower buds sprouting from inappropriate parts will be cut off, sacrificing good flowers and delaying the flowering period, which will make it difficult for the plant to recover for a long time.

Note:
The reason why roses die in winter in cold northern areas is not due to low temperatures, but to cold winds. Under drought conditions, strong winds will quickly dry out the upper branches of the plant and develop from top to bottom, eventually causing the entire plant to die. While protecting against cold, we should pay more attention to wind protection. Cold protection measures are generally carried out in December. For larger rose plants, after weak pruning (intensive pruning is not suitable and can be pruned before germination in the following spring), a wind barrier is set up in the northwest to prevent wind and heat preservation.

General rules for pruning:
Go inside and stay outside. Prioritize pruning out inward-growing branches and buds, leaving outward-facing ones.
Get rid of the weak and keep the strong. Prune off thin, weak branches, dry branches, and old branches, and retain strong branches and new branches.
Go up and stay. When the two buds and branches are about the same strength, the lower buds and branches should be retained first.
Get rid of illness and stay strong. Prune off diseased branches and leaves, leaving only healthy branches.
Remove crossing branches, staggered branches, parallel branches, and aging branches.
Pruning requires you to make a decision based on your maintenance environment and the health of the plant.
But whether you want to prune roses or micro moons, whether you prun roses, hydrangeas, clematis or other plants, or whether you are located in the warm south or the cold north, the pruning principles are the same. of.
In short, all old, weak, sick and disabled, all branches that affect the ventilation and sunlight of the plant, and all branches that do not suit your aesthetics can be pruned…

Precautions when practicing winter pruning:
1. Before pruning, determine the branches and leaves to be pruned by observation. The roots and branches required to be repaired basically include: withered roots and branches, roots and branches attacked by diseases and insect pests, and roots and branches that are too thin. We can cut off these useless branches starting from the bottom of the plant.
2. Use sharp scissors and cut flatly at 0.5cm~1cm above the bud point when pruning. Remember, if you cut too close to the bud point, the flower buds will not have a chance to germinate. The bevel of the cut should be opposite to the direction of the bud point. If the upper part of the bud point is left too long, it will cause black branches from top to bottom. Be sure to use a pair of sharp scissors. If the scissors are too blunt, the cutting edge will collapse the buds and easily cause the branches to wither.
3. Remove all leaves after pruning. In order to prevent residual diseases and insect pests on old leaves from affecting plant growth next year, the remaining leaves can be removed after pruning is completed.
