How to keep roses alive in a vase

No matter how many, no matter what color, they are full of love and admirable.
However, roses are potted plants after all. If the received flowers are thrown aside regardless of care, they will wither in just two or three days, and they will wither after a longer period of time.

In fact, people’s living standards have improved now. They give roses on Valentine’s Day and May 20, carnations on Mother’s Day, flowers on birthdays and graduations. You can buy flowers when you are in a good mood, and you can also buy flowers when you are in a bad mood (you can buy them online or at a flower shop) ), flowers appear frequently in our lives.

Recovery of flower materials
If the bouquet is not brought home in time and has become dehydrated and wilted; or if the purchased flowers are squeezed together during logistics and transportation, causing the flowers to deform, it is recommended to use deep water to wake them up.
Specific method: If the flowers are drooping, remove the outer packaging of the bouquet, cut off a small section of the end of the flower branches, and then place them in a container filled with cold water, leaving only the flower heads exposed on the water. After one to two hours, the flower branches will wake up. This method is suitable for both herbs and woody flowers.

Choose a suitable vase
Try to choose a vase with a wide mouth and a deep one. According to your own preferences, choose transparent or colored ones. It is best to choose matching vases with different flower materials. I’m really too lazy to choose, white and transparent are both more versatile.

When arranging flowers, the water level in the bottle should not be too high. Generally, 1/3 to 1/2 of the bottle height is better, and should not exceed 2/3 of the bottle height. Therefore, generally flower arrangements with many flowers should use bottles with a swollen belly, because the water can hold a large amount and the water quality is not easy to become dirty. On the contrary, narrow-belly or cylindrical containers that hold less water will deteriorate quickly.


Processing Flower Materials
Reduce consumption and avoid rot
Before inserting into the vase, remove any remaining flowers and some excess leaves from the stems (just leave a few decorative pieces on top).
This serves two purposes:
First, reduce the respiration and transpiration of the overall flower branches and reduce the consumption of nutrients by these things;
Second, reduce bacterial growth. If the leaves of cut flowers are soaked in water until they reach the mouth of the bottle, the leaves will easily rot and bacteria will breed, which is not conducive to the preservation of the flowers.

Cutting method
Most people know that when arranging flowers, use scissors to make an oblique cut at the base of the flower stem, which can increase the water-absorbing area of the flower. You can try soaking the flower stems in water before cutting them to reduce air intake into the stems and keep them fresher longer.
Cut the length to about 2 cm, which can also be determined according to the length of the vase. Generally speaking, flowers with strong water absorption, such as gladioli and ginger flowers, can be cut higher. Varieties with weak water absorption should be cut shorter, such as roses, jasmine, etc.
Keeping flowers fresh
When buying flowers, most merchants will provide a small packet of flower preservative; if you are not sure whether it is available, you can ask the merchant for some.
Adding such a preservative to water generally requires a certain ratio and just follow the instructions.
If there is no such preservative, you can still have enough food and clothing by doing it yourself.
Then we need to start from the principle of preservation and do the following tasks:
1. Carbohydrates are used to maintain the nutritional source of flowers. Generally, sucrose (white sugar at home is enough) or sugary drinks can be used; the concentration coefficient of sugar is 0.5%~1.0%. However, while maintaining nutrition, the number of bacteria will increase, so a bactericide is needed, as follows.
2. Fungicides. Excessive growth of bacteria will block the conduits in the flower stems, preventing water from being transferred to the flower heads through the conduits, thus shortening the life of the cut flowers. Frequent root pruning and water changes are generally emphasized to prevent this problem from occurring. Of course, you can also use some fungicides to solve this problem.
There are many things available. 84 disinfectant or aspirin commonly used at home can also achieve this effect, but pay attention to the concentration. An ordinary vase only needs 1 to 2 drops, and half a tablet of aspirin is mixed with 0.5 liters of water.
You can also add a few drops of vinegar or lemon juice to acidify the bottle fluid to inhibit the growth of bacteria.
Adding salt can also achieve the purpose of sterilization, but the concentration of salt water should not be too high and should be controlled below 5%, otherwise the flowers will be dehydrated.

Things to note:
Keep water clean:
In summer, when the temperature is high, the water should be changed every day. In winter, the water can be changed every 1 to 2 days according to the indoor temperature. In addition to changing the water, the vase also needs to be cleaned. When changing the water, cut the roots to reveal new growth, and cut off about 2 cm in length. Remove excess leaves from the soaked area.
Stay away from the heat-causing agent ethylene:
Stay away from vegetables and fruits, as they will release a large amount of ethylene, which will cause the flowers to decline. At the same time, clean up the fallen flowers and fruits in time.

Placement:
Keep away from direct sunlight in summer and away from drafts in winter. In short, put it in a place with leeward sun protection.
Water spray: distinguishing flower materials
Many people like to spray water on the finished flowers. The water droplets make the flowers appear fresher. Not all flowers are suitable for spraying water. Flowers with many petals, such as roses and carnations, can easily retain water in their petals after spraying, causing the petals to rot and turn yellow. However, hydrangeas like water very much, especially when it is dry, you can spray a small amount of water to prevent the flowers from withering.
