Keeping a rose at home is a choice for many people in big cities. It not only beautifies the living environment, but also is very eye-catching. When you wake up in the morning and see it, your mood will be very happy for the day. But over time, it is inevitable that it will become monotonous, so it is necessary to raise and reproduce several pots of roses with different colors. So, how do roses reproduce? Below, the editor will introduce 5 methods for breeding roses.
How to reproduce roses, cutting is the most commonly used
Rose, originally from China, has become a world-renowned flower and is also regarded as the national flower in many countries. For many years, roses have been the target of breeding by experts, so there have been many propagation methods circulating. There are five ways to reproduce roses: cutting, grafting, sowing, layering, and splitting.
5 ways to reproduce roses
Cutting propagation
There are many methods for propagating roses, but the most commonly used and convenient one is still cutting. The propagation of roses through cuttings can be divided into two types: hardwood cuttings and tender stem cuttings. The specific procedures are as follows:
① Hardwood cutting
If it is hardwood cutting, the timing should be chosen before the plant sprouts in February or March; For cuttings, choose sturdy, plump, full bud eyes, and pest free branches that are 2 years old, and cut them into 15 centimeters. Then apply mud to the lower end of the cuttings and insert them into the cutting bed.
② Insertion of tender branches and stems
If it is a young branch insertion, the timing should be between July and August; When inserting the cuttings, select the tender branches that are born in the current year and then insert them into the cutting bed. Generally speaking, after cutting according to the above method, it takes about a month to root, and then it can be transplanted and maintained in a timely manner.
The choice of bed insertion
Whether it is hardwood cutting or tender stem cutting, the cutting bed is extremely crucial. In the cultivation method of roses, we have introduced that they prefer loose, transparent, and well drained soil. So the cutting substrates that flower enthusiasts can choose from are: sandy soil with good permeability, perlite, metatarsite, and carbonized rice husks.
Attention: To prevent rose cuttings from getting sick, before planting, flower enthusiasts should spray soil with potassium permanganate and methyl tobramycin at 500-800 times dilution for disinfection, and then cover with plastic film for 3-4 days.
Post insertion management
By following the above steps, the propagation of rose cuttings is basically over, but post planting management is also extremely important to ensure a 100% survival rate. Firstly, the temperature should be maintained at 18-28 ℃; Secondly, there is light exposure. When cutting cuttings, shade should be provided, and after 10-15 days, the cuttings can gradually receive sunlight. Finally, watering should be done frequently and sparingly.
Grafting propagation
In addition to cuttings, grafting is also a commonly used method for propagating roses, and the rootstock is usually chosen from roses or white magnolias. Grafting propagation is also divided into two types, bud grafting and branch grafting. The specific operations are as follows:
① Sprout grafting method: Every 5-9 days, select plump bud holes from high-quality roses and cut them off. Then, graft 1-2 buds onto white magnolia or rose rootstock Branch grafting method: Every spring, high-quality rose branches can be grafted onto rose or white magnolia rootstocks.
Sowing and Breeding
This is a rare method of reproducing roses. The seeds received in autumn are placed in plastic bags filled with moist sand and placed in an environment that is frozen at night and thawed during the day. After one month, gradually raise the temperature to around 20 ℃, and once the seed cracks and sprouts, it can be sown. When the seedlings grow 3-5 small leaves, they can be planted.
Stripe propagation
Another method of propagating roses is usually from June to August. Select strong branches that are born in the same year, bend them into the soil, carve the parts that are cut into the soil, embed them in the wound with soil blocks, bury them in the soil, fix them with bamboo forks or tree branches, let the branches expose the ground, keep the soil moist, and take root in 2-3 months. The following spring, they can be separated from the mother plant and planted separately.
Splitting method
From November to December every year, after the fallen leaves of roses, robust new plants can be dug from the large flower stump next to the mother plant, with 2-3 stems per clump, and planted separately with roots. After planting, cut off the stem from 20-25cm above the soil surface and cultivate for 2-3 years to form clusters and bloom.
That’s all for the propagation methods of roses. I believe that after reading the entire article, everyone can find a suitable propagation method for themselves. I want to turn one pot into ten pots, so that roses of various colors can bloom all over the house. The scenery is so beautiful just thinking about it, so what are we waiting for? Hurry up and give it a try!
